Bicycle safety

Bicycling is a very enjoyable activity for many. For some it is an alternative means of travel, as oppose to driving a car. But, as with any activity, safety must be considered. This is especially important when bicycling on automobile roads. Both drivers and bicyclists play a role in keeping each other safe.

Automobile drivers can do much to protect themselves, and a biker, when they cross paths. A driver should never tailgate a bicyclist; as the vehicle passes, the wind may pull the biker towards the vehicle. At least 3 feet should be between the vehicle, and the bicycle.

Never pass a bicyclist before making a right hand turn. It is easy for the driver to misjudge the speed of the bicycle. Allow the bicyclist to pass, then make the turn.

Taking steps to prevent a possible accident also lies with bicyclists. To stay in a visible location, while on the road, a bicyclist should ride with traffic. Have front and rear lights, on the bicycle, when riding at nigh time.

Road rules apply to bikes, as it does for automobiles. So a biker should should stop for red lights and stop signs. Also use hand signals when making a turn.

Obeying laws and using common sense is key. It isn't a 100% guarantee that both will be safe, but it will greatly increase the chances.
